PostNord to Stop Mail Delivery in Denmark – 1,500 Jobs Cut.

Denmark: The postal service will stop delivering letters

PostNord in Denmark will cease mail delivery starting at the turn of the year. Instead, the company will focus on parcel distribution moving forward. As a consequence of this decision, 1,500 employees will lose their jobs, according to a press release from PostNord.

The decision comes after several years of sharply declining mail volumes and significant financial losses. Going forward, PostNord will focus on parcel delivery, marking the end of more than 400 years of state-organized mail distribution in Denmark.

Mass Layoffs as a Result

According to PostNord, approximately 700 of the 2,200 employees currently working in mail services will be offered new positions. The state-owned postal giant also states that the workforce will be reduced by around 1,500 employees over the course of 2025. PostNord Denmark currently employs about 4,600 people.

Mail Delivery Has Been Unprofitable

Mail services in Denmark have long been a loss-making division for the Swedish-Danish company PostNord, and the situation worsened when a new postal law came into effect in January 2024, removing the obligation to deliver mail and eliminating state subsidies.

Mail Volume Down 90 Percent

According to PostNord, the decline in the number of letters sent is a natural consequence of increasing digitalization in Denmark.

“Since the year 2000, mail volumes have decreased by over 90 percent, and the new postal law has further accelerated this development. In 2024 alone, the number of letters has fallen by more than 30 percent compared to the previous year — and the trend continues in the same direction,” the company writes in its press release.

PostNord will officially end all mail delivery on December 30, 2025.
